Poetry about Beauty

A false notion of spirituality is that spirituality involves asceticism and renouncing the world. Sri Chinmoy holds that this is not the right approach. Beauty is a divine quality.

As Sri Chinmoy says:

“What is Beauty? Beauty is the oneness of the finite and the Infinite. Beauty is the expression of the Infinite through man the finite. Beauty is man’s embodiment of God, the Infinite. In the material world, in the physical world, it is through Beauty that God reveals Himself.”

 Excerpt from talk "Duty Supreme"

You are God's Beauty

You are God's Beauty:
Beauty human,
Beauty divine,
Beauty supreme.
This lofty truth shall forever remain unchallenged.

The beauty of the material world can never match the beauty of the Divine manifestation. The Supreme can take different finite forms to reveal his divine beauty to the sincere seeker. In many of Sri Chinmoy’s poems he writes powerfully about the intense beauty of the Supreme.

O My Lord of Beauty

“ You are beautiful, more beautiful, most beautiful,
Beauty unparalleled in the garden of Eden.
Day and night may Thy image abide
In the very depth of my heart..."

Excerpt from: O My Lord of Beauty by Sri Chinmoy

Inner Beauty

Beauty is not just about outer beauty, but the inner beauty of the soul. In this poem "O Light of the Supreme" Sri Chinmoy suggest that beauty comes through loving identification with the Divine.

O Beauty non pareil, O Beloved,
Do burn the fire of beauty and splendour
within my heart.
By loving You, eternally beautiful I shall be.

There is a famous saying that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” In spirituality the way we view an object is of paramount importance. For example if we listen to music with only our critical mind we will get a different experience to listening with an open heart.

In this poem about the great Hindu avatar Sri Krishna, Sri Chinmoy explains in poetic form how even a divine manifestation of Krishna can look undivine if we project our uncomely and dark thoughts on to him

My Krishna is not black,
He is pure gold.
He Himself is woven
Into the universal Beauty, Light and Splendour.
He looks dark
Because I have spilled the ink
Of my mind on Him.
Otherwise, my Beloved is All-Light.
He created Light and Darkness,
He is within and without the Cosmos Vast.
With this knowledge,
I will have a new acquaintance
With the world at large.
